Nicolai F. S. Grundtvig (1783-1873)
Grundtvig was a Danish Priest, teacher, author, poet, philosopher, historian, pastor, hymn writer and social activist. One of his legacies is the development of the concept of the Folk High School.
Grundtvig’s aim was to give the peasantry a higher educational level through personal development; what Grundtvig called “the living word”. Grundtvig's focus was on what today we call 'non-formal education' the goal of which was enlightenment.
For Grundtvig dialogue across differences was essential. He believed that people must learn to deal with difference if enlightenment is to be achieved. |
Today the adult non-formal part of the European Commission's Life Long Learning Programme is known as Grundtvig .
